Facebook, Google seek caution from governments on regulation

The e-G8 forum in Paris produced no firm proposals but generated resounding warnings from Facebook and Google chiefs for governments to tread lightly in regulating the Internet or risk smothering its virtues. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg said that “it’s hard to have one without the other,” referring to the liberating force of Facebook during the so-called Arab spring as well as the Internet’s capacity to quietly gather user information. For his part, Google’s Eric Schmidt advised, “Technology will move faster than governments, so don’t legislate before you understand the consequences.”  Reuters
