Law firms fear social tools are too hot to handle

Law firms are starting to test the social-media waters, using Twitter, LinkedIn and corporate blogs to build their profiles and reach out to prospective clients. Still, there’s a risk attached to social-media use, argues U.K. legal educator Jon Harman. By letting individual lawyers build close relationships with clients, social tools risk weakening clients’ loyalty to the firms themselves. “Law firms need to become more aware of this as if you can raise awareness of yourself as a good lawyer, you can take that client base wherever you want,” Harman notes.
