Facebook snaps up Friendster patents for $40 million

Facebook has bought 18 wide-ranging patents linked to social-networking technologies from ailing social service Friendster in a deal reportedly worth $40 million. The move allowed Facebook to secure the intellectual-property rights to the technology underpinning its service, and allowed MOL Global to recoup the approximately $39.5 million it paid to acquire Friendster in 2009.  VentureBeat
