Social media aids alternate-reality games

Social media is giving a boost to alternate-reality games — a cult phenomenon that involves elaborate, sometimes months-long gaming scenarios. Microsoft and Hollywood film studios have tapped into the games as a way to advertise, and some of the games have seven-figure budgets.
